Why do galactogogues work?

Galactogo: (from Greek: milk + leader)

It is a substance that promotes lactation in humans and other animals. It can be synthetic, plant-derived or endogenous. They can be used to treat low breast milk supply.

For centuries, certain herbs and foods have been used in different cultures to promote breast milk production and their use is becoming more common worldwide. Around the world, women have used alternative approaches in an attempt to increase breast milk production such as following special diets and the use of herbs or natural substances. Mothers from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds choose different approaches according to their traditions or experience.

Galactagogues are a group of substances or medications that have been shown or believed to assist lactation during its initiation and maintenance stages, thereby increasing the supply of human breast milk. In other words, galactagogues are substances that women can use to induce, increase or maintain breast milk production. 

1. The use of moringa as a galactogogue

    180% increase in milk volume on the fifth day of consumption

    Mothers of babies born at week 37 in the treatment group had a greater increase in milk volume on day 4 (67% vs. 42%) and day 5 (180% vs. 38%) than mothers in the treatment group. placebo. Milk volumes on day 5 were 320 ml in the treatment group and 120 ml in the control group.

    Comparable effect with domperidone and metoclopramide

    On days 7 and 14, the milk volume in all treatment groups was greater than that in the placebo group. The highest volume was recorded in the domperidone group, followed by metoclopramide and Moringa oleifera.
